The original author and date the nursery rhyme was written are unknown. However the message behind it remains clear. Basically the rhyme would be told to children i an attempt to instill importance of listening and the wisdom of observing and keeping quiet. The lyrics are based on the behaviour of owls as they hunt, watching and waiting patiently. It delivers the message of "children should be seen and not heard."
